NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— Dayton men’s golf has been selected to win the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship in the league’s annual Championship Poll, which was released Friday ahead of the start of A-10 Match play, which begins Monday, Feb. 20.

The Flyers garnered five first-place votes in the poll, which was conducted among the league’s head golf coaches. Dayton finished in third last year at last year’s championship behind VCU and Richmond, but led the first two rounds for the 54-hole event. UD returns four of its five golfers from that team, all of whom finished in the top 25 at the A-10 Championship. Dayton, led by longtime head coach Gip Hoagland, totaled 112 points in the poll.

Richmond, the runner up in the previous three championships, was picked second in this 2017 poll with 109 points, just behind Dayton. The Spiders received two first-place votes and are anchored by junior Matt Lowe, who earned a bid to the 2016 NCAA Regionals as an individual. Three-time defending champion VCU finished third in the poll with 100 points and two first-place votes. Jamie Clare, who finished sixth in the A-10 Championship last year, returns for the Rams.

Led by 2016 NCAA Regional participant Billy Walthouse, Rhode Island was picked fourth in the poll with 94 points and two first-place votes. George Mason was selected fifth with 78 points and George Washington had 60 points for sixth place.

Davidson (55 points), St. Bonaventure (36 points) were picked seventh and eight respectively. Saint Joseph’s, La Salle and Fordham rounded out the poll.
