WESTON, Fla. -- VCU men’s golf won the third annual A-10 Match Play, earning wins over George Mason, St. Bonaventure and Oakland to claim its second title in three years.

A-10 Match Play serves as the tee-off to the Spring golf season for A-10 teams. The A-10 Preseason Poll, where the coaches select the predicted order of finish at the championship, will be released later this week.

The Rams won the title with a 4.5 -1.5 win over Oakland in the championship match. Alister Balcombe (1up), Daniel Stamper (3&1), Sachin Kumar (2&1) and Osama Khan (1up) all won their matches for VCU. VCU had also beaten the Bonnies 5-1 in the semifinals and George Mason 5.5-.5 in the first round.

The third-annual event was played at the 6,867-yard Weston Hills County Club. VCU claimed the inaugural match-play tournament in 2016 and Dayton won last year's event.

FAU finished third and St. Bonaventure fourth by virtue of a tiebreaker – FAU had the most holes through 18. The Bonnies beat Dayton in a close first round match, 3.5-2.5. Zach Chaddock (2&1) and Brent Morgan (1up) each had wins for the Bonnies in that first match, while Dannay Gianniny (3&1), Chaddock (1up) and Matt Abendroth (2&1) earned wins against FAU.

George Washington was fifth, beating George Mason in a tiebreaker. Jack Porcelli (1up) and Logan Lowe (5&4) each had wins for the Colonials while Eric Edwards (1up) and Jeff Wilson (5&4) had victories for Mason. GW won the match on the second tiebreaker – which went to the winner of match five.

Saint Joseph’s also participated in the event. Oakland and FAU, which are not A-10 members, participated in the event to balance out the number of teams in the field.

The 2018 Atlantic 10 men's golf championship begins Friday, April 27 at The Villas at Grand Cypress in Orlando, Fla. The 11 A-10 golf teams will play 18 holes per day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Practice rounds are slated for Thursday. Admission to the Atlantic 10 Golf Championship is free. The winner of the 54-hole event will receive the Atlantic 10's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
