NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Fordham senior James Mongey was chosen as the Atlantic 10 Golfer of the Week, while Rhode Island freshman Bobby Weise was chosen as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards, which are the first of the 2017-18 regular season, were announced Friday and are for events played from the season opening tournaments through Sept. 13.

Mongey won the Ryan T. Lee Memorial Collegiate at Hop Meadow Country Club. A Morristown, N.J., native, Mongey followed his career-best 68 in round one with an even par 72 today for a two-day total of 140, the second-lowest two-day total in program history. Fordham also won the team title for its first victory since the 2015-16 season.

Weise, a Freehold, N.J., product, was Rhode Island's top finisher in his first collegiate tournament, despite playing as the team's No 4 golfer. He carded a first-round 73 and followed with a pair of 71s in the final two rounds. Weise parred his last 15 holes in the final round to make the jump from 28th place to 22nd. Overall he birdied three holes overall and parred 4.
