Plantier Named Baseball Player of the Week; DiCesare, Knehr Share Pitcher Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Richmond graduate student Tyler Plantier was chosen as the Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Fordham junior Reiss Knehr and George Mason sophomore Jared DiCesare were named A-10 Co-Pitchers of the Week. Rhode Island freshman Xavier Vargas was named A-10 Rookie of the Week.  The awards, announced Monday, are for games played May 7-13.

 

Plantier led the Spiders offensive last week. In five games the first baseman hit .471 (8-for-17) with three extra base hits including a solo home run versus La Salle. He tallied eight hits across the five games, two of which were doubles. The Poway, Calif. native also had four RBI, a stolen base and he drew five walks. At No. 3 North Carolina, Plantier went 2-for-3 at the plate. Last week his on base percentage was .591 with a .765 slugging percentage.

 

A right hander from Glen Head, N.Y., Knehr was stellar in the Rams' series opening win at UMass on Friday. He tossed his first career complete game shutout in a 3-0 win, allowing four hits and while striking out a season-high 11 batters. Knehr reached 200 career strikeouts in the game, becoming the eighth Ram ever to reach that plateau. He also faced 33 total batters and threw 116 pitches in the Rams’ win.

 

DiCesare pitched a complete-game three-hitter in Mason's 2-0 win over Saint Joseph's on Senior. The right hander from Chantilly, Va., allowed just three singles and struck out a season-high nine batters without a walk. He retired 18 straight batters from the third through the eighth inning. DiCesare threw a season-high 113 pitches, including tossing a first pitch strike to 24 of the 30 batters he faced in the game.

 

Vargas hit a team-best .500 on the week, going 5-for-10 with a triple and a double. A first baseman from Woodhaven, N.Y., he slugged .800 thanks to hitting a double and a triple during the week. He also drew a pair of walks for a .583 on-base percentage. Over the three games, Vargas scored three times and drove in two runs.
