St. Bonaventure, VCU Win Atlantic 10 Baseball End-of-Year Awards
The awards, along with the All-Conference, All-Rookie and All-Academic Teams, were announced Wednesday to kick off the 2017 A-10 Baseball Championship at Saint Louis University's Billiken Sports Center.
Sudbrook, in his 32nd year, led the Bonnies to a 26-20 record and an A-10 mark of 15-8 in conference play. The long-time coach guided the Brown and White to a third-place finish after being picked ninth in the league's preseason poll. It's the third Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year honor for Sudbrook, and the first since 2006.
Farrar batted .344 during the regular season, with 74 hits, 24 of which went for extra bases. He had eight home runs, and drove in 29 RBI. Farrar scored 46 runs in leading the Rams to a first-place finish in the A-10, playing all 51 games for VCU. He also drew 23 walks, stole four bases and had 141 putouts from the outfield, third most on the team. He was in the top five in the league in runs scored and doubles.
Phillips had a team-low 2.77 ERA among the regular Bonnies starters. He made 14 appearances during the regular season, 13 of which came via starts. He had a league-high nine wins as part of an impressive 9-1 record with two complete games and a team-high 81 strikeouts, which was third in the A-10.
Witt, a second baseman, led the conference with a .374 batting average, was second in on-base percentage and tied for first with 75 hits. During the regular season, he scored 33 runs on 76 hits, with 11 extra base hits and 33 RBI.
The 13-member All-Conference First and Second Teams and the 13-member All-Rookie Team were selected by a vote of the 13 Atlantic 10 head coaches. The 12-member All-Academic team was chosen by the league's baseball communications directors.The 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship begins Wednesday at 11:00 am ET with four games and concludes Saturday with the league's championship finals. All of the Friday and Saturday games will be televised live on the American Sports Network (ASN). Every game of the championship will also be available digitally on the A-10 Network. The winner of the double-elimination tournament receives the Atlantic 10's bid to the NCAA Regionals.
