Cavanaugh Earns Final A-10 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — George Washington’s Tyler Cavanaugh was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week while Richmond freshman De’Monte Buckingham earned Rookie of the Week honors. The awards, announced Monday, were for final regular season games played Feb. 27– March 5.
Cavanaugh led GW to a 2-0 week with a road win at Fordham and a home victory over regular-season champion Dayton, averaging 25 points and nine rebounds on .593 shooting from the field. With GW trailing 66-64 at Fordham, he nailed three game-winning free throws with 0.9 seconds to play. The Syracuse N.Y., native also recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, connecting on 7-of-11 shots and all five of his free throw attempts. Then, against the Flyers, Cavanaugh put on a show by pouring in 30 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including 6-of-8 3-pointers which matched a career high. Five of those threes came in a first half that saw him tally 19 points. Along with the 30 points, he grabbed eight boards and hit 6-of-7 at the free throw line.
Buckingham scored a career-high 23 points against Saint Louis while shooting 7-for-9 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from three. He also grabbed six rebounds and tied a career high with four steals. On the week, the Richmond, Va., product averaged 17 points, four rebounds and four assists and three steals. He also shot 68.8 percent from the field and 75.0 percent from three with six treys.
Atlantic 10 Weekly Honor Roll
Davidson’s Jack Gibbs finished the week averaging 29.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game, while shooting 45 percent (9-20) from behind the 3-point line … Dayton’s Kendall Pollard scored 11 points in 17 foul-plagued minutes in the VCU win and 24 points at George Washington … Richmond’s T.J. Cline tallied his second triple-double of the season with 19 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds on Senior Night … Rhode Island’s Hassan Martin averaged a double-double - 16.5 points and 13.0 rebounds - in a 2-0 week for Rhode Island … Saint Louis’ Davell Roby scored a career-high 23 points in the win against La Salle; he shot 7-of-14 from the field, 4-of-8 from 3-point range and 5-of-6 from the line … Teammate Elliott Welmer scored 15 of his 17 points and eight rebounds in the second half against the Spiders … VCU’s Justin Tillman turned in his eighth and ninth double-doubles of the season, averaging 21.0 points, 10.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks, while shooting 72 percent (18-of-25) from the floor.
