BRONX, N.Y.—Fifth-seeded Fordham got a double-double out of G’mrice Davis and placed three players in double figures to beat No. 12 Davidson, 62-54, in the First Round of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Championship at Rose Hill Gymnasium.
The Rams (21-10) will face No. 4 Saint Louis in the quarterfinals Friday at 2:00 pm. That game, along with the other three quarterfinals, will air on American Sports Network (ASN) and online at americansportsnet.com/live. The quarterfinals, semifinals and championship final will all be played in Richmond, Va., at the Richmond Coliseum for the fourth straight year.
Davis shot 6-of-15 (.400) from the field to score a game-high 17 points, while also corralling 16 rebounds, six of which were on the offensive end. In all, Fordham had 14 second-chance points following 14 rebounds on their own end of the court. Kate Kreslina and Danielle Burns each added 11 for the Rams.
The game was close through halftime, with Davidson leading 18-15 at the end of the first quarter and 31-29 at the intermission. But Davis hit a jumper 15 seconds into the third quarter that sparked an 11-0 Fordham run highlighted by a pair of Kreslina threes and a triple by Hannah Missry. A three by Burns and a Davis free throw gave the Rams an 11-point lead.
Davidson pulled within six twice in the fourth quarter, once on a free throw by Mackenzie Latt, and again on a layup by Andrea Robinson. But Fordham responded and pushed the lead back to double digits. A pair of late free throws by the Wildcats’ Justine Lyon set the final margin.
Latt had 15 points, and Lyon and Chloe Johnson each had 13 to lead Davidson. Latt had eight rebounds for the Wildcats, which finish the season at 6-23.
