WASHINGTON – The USA Basketball Women’s National Team is coming to the Charles E. Smith Center for its final stateside exhibition game before heading to Europe for the 2018 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

The U.S. squad, which will be assisted by GW women’s head coach Jennifer Rizzotti, will face Japan at 7 p.m. in exhibition play at Smith Center on Monday, Sept. 10. Tickets will go on sale at a later date.

"I look forward to showcasing GW and the Smith Center when Team USA comes to town this September,” said Rizzotti. “We have a storied women's basketball tradition here, and I am confident that our fans and our community will come out to support the team and witness our preparation as we set off overseas to win our third consecutive gold medal at the FIBA World Cup."

The exhibition comes a week after the U.S. opens training camp at the University of South Carolina, home of WNT head coach Dawn Staley. After playing an intrasquad exhibition on Sept. 5 at Colonial Life Arena, the USA heads to Bridgeport, Connecticut to face Canada on Sept. 7, and then caps the preliminary slate at GW.

“Any time that you can play in our nation’s capital, it’s always a great thing,” said Staley. “Especially when you are representing our country in this way. I hope that fans from all over D.C., the tri-state area come out and support our team as it will be the last time that they will get a chance to see us before we compete in the World Cup.”

Prior to arriving in Tenerife, Canary Islands, for the Sept. 22-30 FIBA World Cup, the USA will play in a four-team, international tournament in Antibes, France, Sept. 15-17.

Winners of back-to-back World Cup titles and four of the past five FIBA World Cups, the USA owns a record nine gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze medals in FIBA World Cup play, while compiling an all-time 103-21 record at the event. In Rizzotti’s extensive coaching experience with USA Basketball, she’s worked with five teams that won gold medals.
