Butler, Gits Share A-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week Honors
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — George Mason’s Natalie Butler and Saint Louis’ Maddison Gits were named as the Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week while Fordham’s Bre Cavanaugh earned Rookie of the Week honors. The awards were for games played Jan. 29-Feb. 4.
Butler averaged 24.5 points, 16 rebounds, 3.5 steals, 3.0 blocks, and 2.0 assists in a pair of road wins last week. The 6-foot-5 graduate student from Fairfax Station, Va., scored 22 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in a 76-63 win at St. Bonaventure on Wednesday. She also had four blocks, four steals, and two assists as she shot 9-of-14 from the field. On Sunday, she scored 27 points and hauled in 15 rebounds for her 23rd straight double-double, which leads the country and is the fourth-longest streak in Division I women’s basketball history. She also had three steals, two assists, and two blocks. She has now scored 20 or more points in eight games this season.
Gits, a senior from Fitchburg, Wis., averaged 24.5 points and 14.5 rebounds in a pair of Billikens wins this week. Against Fordham, she posted a career-high 34 points (just three shy of the school record) and pulled down 15 rebounds in the thrilling double OT win. Against Davidson, Gits went for 15 points and 14 rebounds. For the week, she shot 18-of-30 (.600) from the field, 3-of-4 (.750) from beyond the arc and 10-of-14 (.714) from the free throw line.
Cavanaugh, a freshman from Allamuchy, N.J., set a new Atlantic 10 season-high with 37 points on 12-of-30 shooting, 5-of-8 from behind the arc, and 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. She scored the Rams’ final 10 points in regulation, including clutch free throws with 10 seconds left, and eight points in the double overtime period. The 37 points were a new Fordham freshman record and the fourth-most among all players. Cavanaugh followed that up with an all-around game against Rhode Island, tallying a career-high seven steals, second-most in a single game in program history, in addition to her 20 points, five rebounds and four assists. For the week, she averaged 28.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 steals.
Atlantic 10 Weekly Honor Roll
Davidson’s Mackenzie Latt averaged a double-double with 26 points and 10.5 rebounds, while shooting 47.7 percent and pocketing seven total steals…Freshman Katie Turner averaged 13 points, 2.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists, which draining 6-of-13 shots from downtown for the week for Davidson…Dayton’s Jenna Burdette scored 18 points and dished out four assists while going a perfect 10-for-10 from the line, which sealed the victory against previously unbeaten Duquesne…Julijana Vojinovic averaged 23 points and 6 rebounds while shooting 55.2 percent for the week…George Mason freshman Nicole Cardano-Hillary has scored in double figures in all 24 games of her career and ranks third in the A-10 in scoring (17.6 ppg) and first in steals (64)…George Washington’s Mei-Lyn Bautista turned in a career day in the win over La Salle, finishing with a career-high 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting and dished out six assists…Massachusetts’ Maggie Mulligan posted back-to-back double-doubles against Richmond and La Salle, and now has 29 career double-double performances…Abigail Johnson recorded her first career double-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds in St. Bonaventure’s game against George Washington.
