Atlantic 10 Hires Matt Doherty As Associate Commissioner, Promotes Jill Redmond
NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— Atlantic 10 Conference Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade announced Thursday the hiring of former basketball coach Matt Doherty to the position of Associate Commissioner for Men’s Basketball. He replaces Jay DeFruscio, who accepted the position of President for Cardinal O’Hara High School in Philadelphia in July. Also announced was the promotion of Jill Redmond to Senior Associate Commissioner for Governance.
A former men’s basketball student-athlete and coach, Doherty brings 27 years of college basketball experience to the A-10. Highlighted by his current position as a scout for the Indiana Pacers and head coaching stints at the University of North Carolina, Notre Dame, Southern Methodist University and Florida Atlantic University, Doherty’s name is familiar in the world of men’s basketball. He was named AP National Coach of the Year in 2001 at UNC. He also spent time as an assistant at Kansas and A-10 member Davidson College, working for Hall of Fame coach Bob McKillop, who he played for in high school. Doherty has also worked as a television analyst. A four-year letterman at UNC, he helped the Tar Heels win the 1982 national championship. He graduated from North Carolina in 1984, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration.

The Atlantic 10 will also welcome two new interns for the 2017-18 season. Asia Thompson will serve as the championships intern while Tre Murrell will serve as the administration and men’s basketball intern. Thompson is a graduate of Methodist University, with a Master’s Degree from North Carolina A&T. Murrell is a Kennesaw State graduate who served as the head student manager for the Owls’ men’s basketball team.
