NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - UMass' Hannah Burnett was named the Atlantic 10 Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday, while Richmond's Megan Gianforte earned Defensive Player of the Week. VCU's Keriann McTavish was named A-10 Rookie of the Week. The awards are for games played Mar. 20-26.
Burnett continued her hot scoring streak as UMass won a pair of games during the week on the road at Harvard and at home against Marist. The attacker from Huntington, N.Y., notched six goals, an assist, had three groundballs and a caused turnover in the pair of games. In the 16-9 win at Harvard, Burnett led UMass with four goals and an assist while also adding two groundballs. In the 10-7 victory over Marist, she tallied a pair of goals, a groundball and a caused turnover. Of her 18 goals this season, 15 have come in the last four games.
Gianforte led the way for the Spider defense on Saturday, stopping 15 shots in Richmond’s 12-8 win at William & Mary. The freshman from Brielle, N.J., who was one save shy of matching her career high, held the Tribe to just 2 of 10 from the 8-meter and allowed just one goal in the final 19 minutes of play. She allowed just 9.12 goals per game through non-conference play, compiling a .517 save percentage.
McTavish scored a career-high six goals and added two assists in the Rams' 21-12 victory over Liberty. It only took her eight shots to score six times and surpass her previous career-high of three goals. McTavish went 2-2 on free position attempts during the game and helped VCU turn a 6-6 tie at halftime into the 21-12 margin of victory. She scored four second-half goals as VCU outscored Liberty 15-6 in the second stanza.
