NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— Davidson’s Ramsay Ritchie and Saint Louis’ Manuel de Backer were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Cross Country Co-Performers of the Week, while Davidson’s Sarah Sears and Dayton’s Taylor Vernot shared Women’s Performer of the Week honors, the league announced Tuesday. Also honored were Davidson’s Jake Carver, who was named the Men’s Rookie of the Week, and La Salle Allana Powlette, who was named the Women’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were based off performances from meets held Oct. 9-15.
Ritchie, a senior from San Francisco, Calif., finished first overall at the Queen City Invitational with a time of 24:10 (8K). His performance ranks as the second best in program history.
De Backer, a junior from Essen, Belgium, led the Billikens at the NCAA Pre-Nationals with a time of 24:08.7 (8K). His performance was good for 59th in the field and the second fastest time in program history.
Sears, a senior from Arlington, Va., took individual honors at the Queens City Invite Friday at McAlpine Park in Charlotte, stopping the clock in 16:50.0. Sears time is the fastest 5K in program history.
Vernot, a junior from Waueon, Ohio, broke the Dayton school record in the 6K with a time of 20:47.1 at the 2017 Pre-National Invitational en route to a 54th place finish. Her performance helped the Flyers finish 21st of 43 teams at the meet that had several ranked in the latest NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country Coaches' Poll.
Carver, a freshman from Valencia, Calif., placed 12th at the Queen City Invitational Friday at with a new personal best time of 25:04 (8K), to help lead the Wildcats to a second-place team finish.
Powlette, a freshman from Stroudsburg, Pa., recorded a time of 22:53.7 (6K) and finished 52nd overall at the Princeton Invitational.
