NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference will hold its first two championships of the season this weekend with the running of the Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships at Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg, Va., on Saturday, October 28. This year’s races will be hosted by George Mason University.

The 2017 Championships mark the 40th annual men’s conference meet and the 29th annual women’s conference meet. The Men’s Cross Country Championship (five-mile race) will begin at 10:00 AM and will be immediately followed by the Women’s Championship (5K) beginning at 10:50 AM.
Vying for the men’s title is A-10 preseason favorite and defending champion, Dayton. The Flyers, currently ranked 9th in the USTFCCCA Great Lakes Regional Rankings, are led by three top-15 performers from last year’s championship in juniors Chris Negri (seventh place) and Spencer Danielson (14th place) and senior Tyler Adgalanis (15th place).
Also in hot pursuit of the men’s title is 2016 championship runner-up, Duquesne. The Dukes are currently ranked 13th in the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Rankings and are in search of their first A-10 title since 2005.
Also contending for this year’s title is Davidson, Fordham, George Mason, George Washington, La Salle, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Richmond, St. Bonaventure, Saint Joseph’s, Saint Louis and VCU.
Richmond, the two-time defending A-10 champions, will look to win their third women’s title in as many years. The Spiders return five top-20 performers from last year’s championship in senior Kylie Regan (13th place), junior Ave Grosenheider (14th place), sophomore Claire Brown (15th place), junior Colleen Carney (17th place) and senior Shelby Cain (18th place).
Dayton finished second last year, and is looking to bring home its second-ever A-10 title, after previously winning the 2009 championship. The Flyers return two top-five finishers from last year’s championship including junior Taylor Vernot (4th place) and sophomore Chloe Flora (5th place).
Joining those two squads in search of the women’s title are Davidson, Duquesne, Fordham, George Mason, George Washington, La Salle, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, St. Bonaventure, Saint Joseph’s, Saint Louis and VCU.
