NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Washington’s Chris Fletcher was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week while Saint Louis’ Eleonore Tchakarova was named the Women’s Player of the Week. Also honored was George Washington’s Dennis Afanasev, who was named the Men’s Rookie of the Week and Davidson’s Alexandra Abele who was named the Women’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were based off performances from Feb. 27-Mar. 5.
Fletcher tallied a perfect week of play as the Colonials took wins over Navy and St. John's. The junior won both of his top-flight doubles matches before winning both No. 2 singles matches in straight-sets. On Sunday, the Windsor, Ontario, Canada native notched his second win over a nationally ranked singles opponent this season, downing St. John's No. 123 Roberto Livi, 6-0, 6-1. Fletcher is now a dominant 10-1 in solo play with a 9-2 doubles mark this spring.
Tchakarova, a senior from Sofia, Bulgaria won both of her No. 1 singles matches in straight sets, against Missouri State on Friday she tallied a 6-4, 6-2 victory. On Saturday she picked up a 6-4, 6-1 decision over her Western Illinois opponent. Tchakarova also went 2-0 in doubles at the No. 1 position, dropping only one game throughout two matches.
Afanasev tallied a pair of singles wins to help the Colonials take victories over Navy and St. John's this weekend. Playing at No. 4 on Saturday, the rookie grabbed a three-set win over his Navy foe. On Sunday, the Leesburg, Va. native came back from a first-set deficit to claim a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 5.
Abele led the way in singles versus UNC Wilmington, recording her sixth consecutive win at No. 4 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory to push her season record to 8-1. The freshman from Cincinnati teamed with Ava Todd in doubles and remained perfect on the season by taking a 7-4 tie-breaker win at No. 3 to help Davidson win the doubles point .The pair ran their record to 9-0 on the season.
