Echko Promoted to Dayton Head Women's Tennis Coach
DAYTON – University of Dayton Vice President/Director of Athletics Neil Sullivan has announced Erica Echko as the new head coach for the Flyer women's tennis team.
"I am delighted to name Erica to the role of Head women's tennis coach," said Sullivan. "The tennis program has been consistently improving since Erica's return to the staff in 2014, and we're confident with her focus shifting to leading our women's program that we will continue to see growth in our success."
Echko has served as the assistant coach for both the men's and women's tennis programs the last three seasons. She had previously served as the head women's tennis coach at Dayton from 2005-07.
"I am thrilled to be the head coach again for my hometown Flyers," Echko said. "While I will miss working with the men's team, I will be able to better focus on the women and continue their improvement. I'm looking forward to getting started next week. I see big things happening for both teams this season."
Between coaching stints with the Flyers, Echko worked as the Interclub Coordinator and Staff Professional at the Five Seasons Sports Club in Northern Kentucky from 2010-15. She also served as a USPTA certified tennis professional at the Garrison Tennis Center in Marietta, Ga. and a school counselor in Dallas, Ga.
Over the past three seasons at Dayton, both programs have reached new heights. The women's team has averaged more than 10 wins per season and has been named an ITA All-Academic Team each year. The men's program has made the Atlantic 10 semifinals in each of the last two seasons and has won 42 matches in that three-year span.
Not only is Echko an experienced coach, she was also an exceptional player. She won the Women's Open Doubles at The Met in 2009, was the USPTA/Midwest Open Female Player of the Year in 2007, and had one of the best all-time winning percentages at Miami (Ohio) from 1999-2002.
Echko graduated from Miami (Ohio) in 2002 and is a native of nearby Centerville, Ohio.
