NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Massachusetts claimed the Atlantic 10 softball regular season title, their first since 2012, and will be the top seed in for the upcoming Atlantic 10 Softball Championship.
The 2018 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship will take play May 9-12 at the Bahoshy Softball Complex on the campus of Fordham University. The Minutewomen will be looking for their 24th A-10 crown in the double-elimination tournament, which begins Wednesday.
All games of the 2018 A-10 Softball Championship will be streamed on the A-10 Network. The winner of the A-10 championship will earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
UMass finished the regular season with a perfect 21-0 mark in the A-10 and 33-12 overall. The Minutewomen are led by redshirt senior shortstop Jena Cozza and freshman pitcher Kiara Oliver. Cozza was a four-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Week award winner, while her teammate, Oliver, took home Pitcher of the Week three times during the season. Massachusetts will get a first-round bye and will open championship play Thursday at noon.
Second-seeded Fordham concluded the regular season with a 18-4 A-10 record and a 30-21 mark overall. The defending champions and winners of the last five A-10 titles will also receive a first-round bye and will face the winner of Wednesday’s No.3 Dayton/No. 6 George Washington matchup on Thursday at 2:30 pm.
Third-seeded Dayton begins championship play with a first-round matchup against sixth-seeded George Washington. First pitch is set for 2:30 pm Wednesday. UD was 15-8 in league play and finished with a 28-23 overall record.
Fourth-seeded George Mason finished at 12-10 in the A-10 and 22-26 overall will open the championship Wednesday at noon against No. 5 Saint Louis. SLU was 27-27 overall and 11-10 in conference games this season. The Patriots/Billikens winner advances to face top-seeded Massachusetts on Thursday.
There will be three games on Wednesday and Thursday, including one consolation bracket elimination game each day. Friday’s semifinal day has three games, two of which are elimination games. The championship game will be play Saturday at 1:00 pm. The if necessary game will take place 30 minutes after the first final, if needed.
Tickets to the championship are $8.00 for adults, $4.00 for youth 17 and under and senior citizens. Students with an Atlantic 10 school id will be admitted free of charge. An All-Session ticket book is available for $24.00 for adults and $12.00 for seniors and youth. Tickets are available on site at the Bahoshy Softball Complex during the championship.
