George Washington Claims Top Seed for A-10 Women’s Basketball Championship

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — On the strength of a 13-3 conference record, George Washington has earned the top-seed for the 2016 Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Championship to be held March 2-6 at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Va.

George Washington (23-6), the defending Atlantic 10 Champions, captured the top overall seed for the championship via a three-team tiebreak over Duquesne and Saint Louis. The Colonials earned the number one seed thanks to their head-to-head victories over the Dukes and the Billikens.

GW will receive one of four byes to the quarterfinals on Friday, March 4, and will face the winner of eighth-seeded Dayton and ninth-seeded George Mason.

Saint Louis, finishing the season 13-3 in the A-10 and 23-6 overall, earned the second-seed because of its head-to-head victory over Duquesne. This season has seen Saint Louis establish new school records for wins in a season, wins in conference play and highest seed entering the A-10 championship. The Billikens will also receive a bye to the quarterfinals of the championship and will face either No. 7 seed Saint Joseph’s or No. 10 seed Rhode Island.

Duquesne (25-4 overall and 13-3 in the A-10) earned the third seed, falling in the head-to-head tiebreak against George Washington and Saint Louis. Duquesne will have a bye to the quarterfinals where they will face the winner of No. 6 Fordham and the winner of Massachusetts and La Salle in game two of the championship.

St. Bonaventure (23-6 overall and 12-4 in the A-10) earned the fourth seed. The Bonnies will face the winner of fifth-seeded VCU and the winner of Davidson and Richmond in game one of the championship.

VCU finished 10-6 in league play and 21-8 overall to take the fifth seed. Fordham and Saint Joseph’s both finished at 8-8, with the Rams garnering the sixth seed with a regular season win over the highest seeded common opponent, George Washington. 

Dayton earns the eight seed with a record of 7-9 in league play. George Mason will be the No.9 seed with a record of 6-10.

Davidson, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Richmond all completed the regular season 5-11. Rhode Island was tabbed as the 10th seed based on .750 winning percentage against the three other opponents, while UMass finished with .500 winning and was slotted 11th. Davidson is seeded 12th as a result of a head-to-head victory over Richmond.

Davidson will open the championship against Richmond at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, followed by 11th seeded Massachusetts and 14th seeded La Salle at 7:00 p.m.

The Atlantic 10 returns to the Richmond Coliseum for the third consecutive year and 2016 marks the fifth time in league history the Championship will be decided on a neutral floor.

First and second round games will be streamed live on the A-10 Network through Atlantic10.com and the A-10 mobile app.  Friday’s quarterfinals will be televised on the American Sports Network (ASN) as well as online on the A-10 Network. Saturday’s semifinals will air live at 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network, while Sunday’s championship finale will be on ESPNU and streamed on WatchESPN at Noon.
