WASHINGTON -- The George Washington University hosted and the Atlantic 10 participated in the 2013 NCAA Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Males and Females on Thursday, as part of the Institute's week long stay in the nation's capital. The Atlantic 10 also participaited in the institute

Attendees participated in a Q&A session with George Washington Provost Steve Lerman and Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion Terri Harris Reid. Additionally, GW Associate Athletics Director for Athletic Facilities Jason Wilson, who graduated from the program in 2009, offered welcoming remarks.

Atlantic 10 Assistant Commissioner Jill Redmond, served as a panelist on the Divisional and Conference Discussion panel. The NCAA Leadership Institute assists approximately 50 ethnic minorities annually in strategically mapping and planning their careers and paths to leadership positions through the exploration of the intercollegiate athletics community.

"The focus of the NCAA Leadership Institute is to assist ethnic minority males and females with exploration of the landscape of intercollegiate athletics and the intersection of their career goals and ambitions, from values clarification to intellectual knowledge," identified Curtis Hollomon, the Director of NCAA Leadership Development.

The format of the institute allows participants to diversify their network, become exposed to key stakeholders within college administration and receive an in-depth view of the opportunities to serve within the NCAA governance structure as they advance their careers. During the workshop, participants focused on leadership and administration, finances, development, communications and human resources. Several members of George Washington Athletics' senior staff also provided feedback and answered questions to the participants.

"The NCAA Leadership Institute is one of the most meaningful opportunities I have been privileged with in my career," said Wilson. "It opened doors for me in terms of networking and gaining a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of top level intercollegiate athletics."

"George Washington does an exemplary job of aligning the mission of the Department of Athletics and Recreation with the overall mission and excellence of the university," noted Hollomon. "We are thrilled that this university hosted us and gave us first-class treatment and an exceptional welcome. Today's participants are excited to return to their respective campuses to share and implement what they learned for the betterment of their athletics endeavors."
