NEWPORT NEWS -- Saint Louis third baseman Braxton Martinez and Charlotte 49ers redshirt freshman catcher Brett Lang were named 2013 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Freshman All-American Second Team, the organization announced today.

A total of 32 standout freshmen college baseball players from every part of the country are featured on the Freshman All-American Team. The 2013 NCBWA Freshman All-American Team features players from 15 conferences and five conference championship teams. The two All-American squads are also made up of nine conference "Rookie of the Year" winners. In addition, one conference "Pitcher of the Year" and 17 all-conference honorees were named to the team.

Martinez made an immediate impact for the A-10 Champion Billikens.   Martinez had a strong rookie campaign for SLU, posting a .314 average with a .450 slugging percentage and a .385 on-base percentage. He was third on the team with seven home runs and 12 doubles. Martinez set the Saint Louis freshman records in hits (76), games played (62) and games started (62), while finishing second in total bases (109), third in doubles (12) and fourth in walks (27). 

Lang was a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference All-Rookie Team. He missed two weeks at end of regular season, but still finished with 40 RBI, tied for third on the team and tied for eighth in Atlantic 10 Conference, the only freshman in the league's Top 10 in RBI. He led all freshman catchers nominated in RBI. Lang tied for team lead with four home runs, which tied him for 16th in A-10. The 49ers won all four games in which he homered. He collected 17 two-out RBI, which were third-most on the team. His 10 bases-loaded RBI were second-most on the team.
