NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—For the second consecutive week, VCU sophomore Romana Kriskova has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference’s Volleyball Player of the Week. Saint Louis sophomore Megan Gilbert was named Defensive Player of the Week and freshman Chidima Osuchukwu of George Washington earned Rookie of the Week honors. The three awards were announced Monday for matches played Sept. 9-15.
Kriskova, a middle blocker, was named to the Lady Vol Classic All-Tournament Team after averaging 5.29 kills per set and hitting .280. A native of Bratislava, Slovakia, Kriskova supplied 28 kills, 10 digs and 33.5 points against Tennessee in a 3-2 win Saturday. She had 14 kills versus ETSU, 17 against Austin Peay and 15 versus Wichita State, pacing the Rams to a 3-1 week. The middle blocker hit over .300 against both Austin Peay and Tennessee and she also averaged 2.21 digs and 0.79 blocks per set
Gilbert, a middle blocker from Tripoli, Iowa, led the Bills with 28 blocks last week. She also recorded 12 digs in five matches on the front line. In matches versus Southern Illinois, Northern Iowa and Miami (Ohio), she had seven block assists in each match. She then had two blocks versus Youngstown State and five versus Bradley. Gilbert recorded 53 kills and hit .350 on the offensive side of the ball for the Billikens. She is currently second in the A-10 in blocks per set at 1.26.
Osuchukwu, a middle blocker from Virginia Beach, Va., hit .361 with 28 kills and just six attack errors in four matches for GW. She was also active on the block, totaling 17.0 blocks with seven solo rejections. Her best match was against James Madison, where she posted 11 kills and nine blocks (two solo, one assist). She also tallied four block versus Georgetown and had seven kills with just one error versus Albany.
