NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—St. Bonaventure’s sophomore Darren Simons has been named the Atlantic 10 Golfer of the Week while Dayton freshman Caleb Wolters earned Rookie of the Week honors the league announced Thursday. The awards are for events played from Sept. 25 – Oct. 1.
Simons opened play at the Little 3 Championship with a five-under par 67 in the morning round. He shot a 73 in the second round, to finish 4-under and capture medalist honors in the 40-player field. The victory earned the native of St. Mary’s, Pa., a berth in next summer's Porter Cup, a prestigious amateur tournament held each year at Niagara Falls Country Club and also led Bona to finish first in the event.
Wolters finished tied for 33 after shooting a 225 at the Cleveland State Invitational. He improved on the final day of the three-round tournament, shooting a 76-77 in the first two round before leaping up to an even 72 in round three. A native of Centerville, Ohio, he currently ranks second on the team with a 73.33 stroke average for the season.
