NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Saint Joseph’s junior forward Jordan Martin has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week, while Massachusetts freshman midfielder Izzie Delario was tabbed as Rookie of the Week for the second time this season. The conference announced the awards Monday for games played Oct. 21 – Oct. 27.
Martin played a key role in two important league wins for the Hawks over the weekend. Martin registered five points , including a pair of timely goals. On Friday, the Nazareth, Pa., native assisted on the first goal of the game at the 2:30 mark and then less than three minutes later doubled the SJU lead with a goal of her own, helping the Hawks to a 3-1 win over Saint Louis. On Sunday against Saint Francis, Martin’s goal broke a scoreless tie and led the Hawks to a 1-0 win in a critical game to keep SJU’s A-10 tournament hopes alive. Martin has now surpassed career highs in goals (eight), assists (seven), and points (23).
A native of Rehoboth Beach, Del., Delario helped UMass to a 2-0 week in league play. The freshman tallied a three-point performance to help the Minutewomen record a 3-1 victory over VCU on Sunday to improve to 14-4 overall and 5-0 in Atlantic 10 play and keep hold of first place in the conference standings. Delario assisted on UMass’ second goal before notching her fifth of the season to put the game away in the 63rd minute. To record the goal, Delario used a tip shot from near the cage, playing a hard hit ball by Molly MacDonnell up into the top of the goal. Delario was honored by the A-10 as Rookie of the Week following the first week of action in September.
