MASSACHUSETTS 81, No. 19 NEW MEXICO 65
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Chaz Williams scored 19 points, Raphiael Putney had 18 and Cady Lalanne added 16 points and 14 rebounds as Massachusetts ran past tired No. 19 New Mexico 81-65 on Friday to reach the Charleston Classic championship.

The Minutemen improved to 5-0 for the second time in four years and will take on either Clemson or Davidson on Sunday night for the tournament title.

New Mexico was playing a day after a double overtime victory against UAB and clearly wore down as the game went on. The Lobos (3-1) tied the game at 61 on Alex Kirk's short jumper with 7:56 remaining. That's when Massachusetts took control with a 14-0 run that put it ahead 75-61.

Kirk finished with a career-best 32 points for New Mexico. The Lobos missed their final eight shots after tying the game and managed just four foul shots down the stretch.

No. 10 VCU 73, LONG BEACH STATE 67
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - Rob Brandenberg scored 19 points to help No. 10 Virginia Commonwealth rally, then fight off several late flurries and hang on to beat Long Beach State 73-67 Friday night in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.

The Rams (4-1) trailed by eight early in the second half before reeling off a 13-0 run to take back control. VCU had four players in double figures, including Juvonte Reddic with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Briante Weber with 15 points.

Branford Jones led Long Beach State (1-5) with 19 points, and Mike Caffey added 15 in their fifth straight loss.

Long Beach State handled VCU's pressure well at times, committing only 10 turnovers.

LA SALLE 78, MORGAN STATE 59
SAINT THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) - Tyrone Garland scored 14 of his game-high 22 points in the second half as La Salle pulled away for a 78-59 win over Morgan State in the Paradise Jam Friday night.

After Anthony Hubbard hit a pair of free throws to pull Morgan State within six, 52-46, with 7:07 to play, La Salle used a 15-2 run to blow the game open. Jerrell Wright scored eight of his 12 points during that stretch and Morgan State (0-5) never drew closer than 15 again.

The Bears led 23-17 with 4:45 left in the first half, but La Salle (3-2) scored 15 of the next 17 points to take a 32-25 lead into the break.

Tyreek Duren finished with 16 points and Sam Mills added 12 for Explorers.

Ian Chiles had 14 points, on 7-of-11 shooting, and five blocks for Morgan State.

La Salle will play Providence in the second round Sunday.
