Newport News, Va. – Dayton’s Aaron Huesman and George Mason’s Chris Cook have been named Atlantic 10 Conference Co Baseball Players of the Week. Saint Louis’ Nick Bates was named Pitcher of the Week, while VCU’s Matt Davis garnered Rookie of the Week honors for games played Feb. 14 – Feb. 16.
Huesman recorded nine RBI and five hits, while batting .556 in nine at-bats this weekend. On Saturday, the sophomore designated hitter had a career-high seven RBI with two home runs, including a grand slam. That single-game RBI total matched the highest mark by anyone in the Atlantic 10 last season (Stenhouse, URI). He finished Friday’s game with a 3-for-6 outing and two runs scored. On Sunday, Huesman had both of Dayton’s RBI while going 2-for-3. He also totaled a .556 on-base percentage and a 1.222 slugging percentage
Cook returned to the Mason lineup after medical redshirting in 2013. He led the Patriots to a 3-0 week, hitting .615. Cook had eight hits, scored nine runs, had two doubles, two homeruns including a three-run homer in the season opener, in addition to five RBI. For the week, Cook has a slugging percentage of 1.143 and an on-base percentage of .667.
Bates came on in relief in the fourth inning in SLU’s first game against No. 21 Alabama. He shut down the Crimson Tide’s bats, hurling 4.2 innings of shutout baseball. Bates allowed three hits and two walks while striking out two. He paced the Billikens to a 2-1 win over the top 25 squad, SLU’s first win over a ranked foe since 2012.
Davis helped VCU take all three games it played over the weekend. The second baseman had hits in all three games and scored four runs during the weekend as well. Davis was 4-4 in a win over Old Dominion on Saturday. He then followed that up with a key, two-out RBI double to push VCU in front of Georgia Tech on Sunday. Four of Davis’ hits came with two outs.
