NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—VCU’s Adam Ball and St. Bonaventure’s Trent McPherson earned the Atlantic 10’s first weekly golf awards of the spring term the league announced Friday. Ball was named Golfer of the Week while McPherson earned Rookie of the Week honors.
Ball, a sophomore from Richmond, Va., captured his first career collegiate win last week at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate. He fired a season-best 66 in the tournament’s final round. He trailed by a stroke heading to the 16th tee, but birdied No. 16 and save par on 17 to take a 1-stroke lead. Ball finished at four-under, shooting a 212 (73-73-66). His performance helped the Rams place fourth of 17 teams with an 895.
McPherson, a freshman from Morgantown, W.Va., shot a 237 (79-81-77) to tie for 15th at the Carlton Oaks Western Illinois Invitational. He was 156th out of 52 players, helping the Bonnies Place fifth in the three-round, two-day tournament at Carlton Oaks Golf Club in San Diego, which played at 7,117 yards.
