Charlotte Takes Three of Four Weekly Track and Field Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Charlotte's Jake Deaton was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Indoor Track and Field Performer of the Week, while teammate T'Sheila Mungo was named Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Track and Field Performer of the Week. Desmond Smallwood of VCU received Men's Rookie of the Week and Charlotte's Alvonna Blakney was named Women's Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday for meets competed in Jan. 7-13.

Deaton, a senior, garnered Men's Performer of the Week after competition this past weekend at the UAB Blazer Invitational. The Mooresville, N.C., native placed first out of 41 competitors in the shot put event with a throw of 17.23m, an IC4A qualifying standard, and leads the league in the shot put event by 1.29m.

Mungo, a sophomore, earned Women's Performer of the Week honors after competing in the 400m this past weekend at the UAB Blazer Invitational. The Charlotte, N.C., native placed first out of 73 competitors with a time of 55.54 seconds, which is an ECAC qualifying standard and the top time for the A-10 so far this season.

Smallwood received Men's Rookie of the Week after performing at the Navy Quad meet this past weekend. The Williamsburg, Va., native finished first in the 60m dash with a time of 7.05 seconds and third in the 200m with an IC4A qualifying time of 22.24 seconds.

Blakney earned Women's Rookie of the Week honors after competing in the 60m hurdles this past weekend at the UAB Blazer Invitational. The Charlotte, N.C., native placed fourth out of 67 competitors, also running an ECAC qualifying time of 8.71 seconds.
