Charlotte Defends Men's Title; Shares Women's Crown With Dayton at A-10 Track and Field Championships

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Charlotte men's track and field team successfully defended its indoor crown from a year ago as it totaled 207 points. The 49ers also earned a share of the women's team title as it split with Dayton, finishing with 145 points at the 2010 Atlantic 10 Championships. On the men's side, Charlotte captured its fourth title in five years as it topped Rhode Island (129 points), which finished runner-up for the third-consecutive season. Rounding out the standings were Temple (126 points), La Salle (82 points), Massachusetts (68 points), Saint Joseph's (45 points), Fordham (39 points), Xavier (35 points), Richmond (32 points) and Saint Louis (17 points). Charlotte won individual titles in the 55-meter hurdles, 55m dash, 200m dash, 400m dash, 500m run. Junior Darius Law won two individual events (200 and 400m titles) and ran the anchor leg of the 49er's winning 4x400m relay team, which clocked a time of 3:17.07. La Salle's Korey Edwards successfully defended his 2009 crown in the 1,000m as he clocked a time of 2:26.83. Edwards also won the mile (4:17.60) and ran on the Explorers' winning 4x800m relay team, which clocked a time of 7:42.10 to Most Outstanding Track Performer recognition. On the women's side, Charlotte and Dayton split the championship for the first time in league history. Temple posted its highest finish since 2003 as it finished third with 108.50 points. Rhode Island (105 points), Duquesne (57.50 points), Saint Louis (46 points), Massachusetts (39 points), Richmond (36 points), Saint Joseph's (36 points), La Salle (35 points), Fordham (26 points) and Xavier (one point) rounded out the standings.
Charlotte's Amanda Goetschius paced the 49ers as she won a pair of distance events, claiming the mile (4:49.86) and 3,000m (9:38.17) en route to Most Outstanding Track Performer honors. Goetschius's time in the 3000m smashed the previous championships record of 9:46.29. The first-team All-Conference consists of the individual winners at the two-day Championship, while the All-Conference second team is made up of the second-place finishers.
