PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- Four-time All-American La Salle runner Sean Quigley (Braintree, MA/ Archbishop Williams) took third-place (13:54.05) in the 5K event at University of Arkansas on Friday night at the NCAA Indoor Track Championships. He was the top American finisher in the event. The winner-Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Shadrack Songok was just three seconds faster, followed by Jacob Korir- both from Kenya.
Quigley led with just two laps to go but was passed in the final leg by two runners as he finished in the third position. Entering the night he had the sixth best 5000m time (13:50.76) of any competitor at the NCAA Championships. Last year he finished seventh in the 5K race. He beat out 12 other runners for his top three finish.
The top eight American finishers in each race garner All-American recognition.
Tomorrow night at 8:35 PM EST is the 3K event for Quigley. In the 3000m race, Quigley has the fifth-fastest time in the country (7:52.47) and will compete for the national title against 15 of the best 3K runners. His 3K time is currently just six seconds shy of the NCAA record in that event.
The senior standout has had a stellar career at La Salle including being honored as the 2008 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track Championship 'Performer of the Meet' after taking the 5000m crown (13:52.66) and anchoring the winning distance medley relay team (10:12.42). His 5000m time at the A-10 Championships was a NCAA provisional qualifying time as well as a new record in the A-10 and at URI's Mackal Field House.
Quigley broke La Salle's school-record in the 3000m event (7:52.47) at Boston University's Terrier Invitational, for his performance he was named both ECAC and A-10 'Performer of the Week' for the second consecutive week. He was named the ECAC 'Athlete of the Week' and A-10 'Performer of the Week' for his top finish in the mile (4:02.80) at the Gotham Cup, the second-fastest time in La Salle running history.
