INDIANAPOLIS - Charlotte senior track and field standout Lamarra Currie traditionally sets records on the track for the 49ers track and field team, but Currie established another first in Charlotte 49ers history by being the first student-athlete to receive the NCAA Ethnic Minority Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship for Careers in Athletics. Currie boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA in psychology.

Currie will receive $6,000 for one year of full-time graduate study at an NCAA member institution per the terms of the scholarship.

According to the NCAA, the collegiate athletics body awards 13 scholarships to ethnic minorities and 13 scholarships to female college graduates who will be entering their initial year of postgraduate studies. The applicant must be seeking admission or have been accepted into a sports administration or other program that will help the applicant obtain a career in intercollegiate athletics, such as athletics administrator, coach, athletic trainer or other career that provides a direct service to intercollegiate athletics.

Currie is in the midst of another record setting track and field season as she has become one of the premier female sprinters in 49ers history by snapping the indoor 60 meter dash school record in January at Penn State.

While being an exceptional athlete, Currie is equally as good in the classroom as she boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA in psychology and picked up ESPN the Magazine Academic First Team honors following a tremendous track season and exceptional year in the classroom.

Currie also was named the Atlantic 10's Most Outstanding Track Performer during the 2008 indoor and outdoor seasons, while being the A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year during the 2008 outdoor season.

The Apex, N.C. native is in action this weekend at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships at the University of Rhode Island.
