Charlotte Women, Rhode Island Men In Lead After Day One

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte's women's track and field team and Rhode Island's men's team go into the final day of competition at the 2011 Atlantic 10 Track & Field Championships on top of the leaderboard. The 49ers have earned 69.5 points while the Rams have totaled 79 points at the end of day one's competition at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Center at Charlotte. Charlotte's women earned four first-place finishes, including two new Atlantic 10 records. Briauna Jones leads the 49ers, winning both the long jump (5.77m) and the high jump (1.65m). Teammates Keara Thomas and Amanda Goetschius set new conference championship records on their way to first; Thomas finishing the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:09.50 and Goetschius completing the 10,000-meter run with a time of 34:59.23. Dayton ended the day in a close second with 65 points, with a record-setting first-place performance by Courtney Siebenaller in the pole vault (3.85m) and a 58.38m mark by Mallory Barnes to win the hammer throw. Trailing Charlotte and Dayton are Richmond (62.5), Duquesne (38.5), Rhode Island (29.5), Massachusetts (24), Saint Joseph's (17.5), Saint Louis (15.5), Fordham (11), Temple (10), La Salle (7) and Xavier (1). On the men's side, Rhode Island made a clean sweep of the high jump with Rainford Thomas, Trent Baltzell and Rob Damon taking first, second and third, respectively. Jacob Keeling added another top finish in the javelin throw, booking a 61.25m mark. The Rams also finished second, third and fourth in the pole vault. Last year's champion, Charlotte finished the day in second with 66.5 points after a strong showing in the field events. Jake Deaton broke the previous meet record in the discus, recording a toss of 55.73m, to earn first. The 49ers also took second in the event. Temple closed out the day in third with 53 points, followed by Massachusetts (46), Duquesne (28), Xavier (20), Saint Joseph's (15), Richmond (13.5), La Salle (12), Fordham (9) and Saint Louis (9).
