UMass Men, Fordham Women Still Number One After Third Day At The Atlantic-10 Swimming & Diving Championships

    BUFFALO, N.Y. - Massachusetts men and Fordham women remain at the top of the leaderboard after the third day of the Atlantic-10 Swimming & Diving Championships on Friday at the Flickinger Aquatics Center.

    The Minutemen continue to lead with a total of 593.5 points while St. Bonaventure holds tight to second, earning 372.5 points and breaking their tie with third place Duquesne (327). The Rams are dominating the women having earned 442 points, 49 points ahead of second place Richmond .

    To kick off the third day, Rhode Island's Lillian Falconer earned the gold medal in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:19.56 while on the men's side Xavier's Michael Zennedjian took first, posting a time of 3:56.82.

    In the 100-yard butterfly, Richmond's Katie Sieben earned the Spiders a number one spot touching in at 54.37, just 1.76 seconds ahead of second place, St. Bonaventure's' Taylor Merena (56.13). On the men's side, UMass picked up another first place when senior Mike Berthaume posted a time of 48.73.

    Next up in the 200-yard freestyle races, Richmond's Charlotte Bracket earned the Spiders another gold touching in at 1:50.00. In the men's sprint, Duquesne's Edward LeBlanc set a conference record with a time of 1:37.64.

    For the 100-yard breaststroke, LaSalle's senior Shannon Duval earned the Explorer's first podium appearance of the night by out-touching Fordham's senior Nicole Marshall. The pair posted times of 1:03.85 and 1:03.90, respectively. St. Bonaventure's senior Marius Michalik posted a time of 56.56 beating out defending champion, Duquesne senior, Ian Walsh (56.99).

    The women's 100-yard backstroke proved to be another record-setting event when Richmond's freshman Lauren Hines set the pool and Atlantic 10 records in the preliminaries (54.24). Hines then broke her own record in the finals, posting a time of 53.94. For the men, UMass senior Andrew Willbrant notched a time of 49.64, picking up another win for the Minutemen.

    In the men's 3-meter diving, UMass had a one-two punch taking first and second place. Jason Cook took gold with a score of 395.05 while Adam Duffield earned 300.90 points for the silver.

     

     

    In the final event of the night, the Richmond women took first place in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of Nicole LePere, Mary Anne Lerro, Katie Sieben and Hines swam for a combined time of 3.42.11. The UMass team of Willbrant, Brian Schmidt, Berthaume and Juan Moliere posted a time of 3.20.24.

    Rounding out the women's' standings are UMass (285), Duquesne (257), LaSalle (250.5), Xavier (190), St. Bonaventure (189), Rhode Island (181), George Washington (128.5) and St. Louis (123). For the men, Fordham sits in fourth with 306.5 points, followed by LaSalle (295.5), Xavier (260), St. Louis (195) and George Washington (138).

    The final day of competition is Saturday with preliminaries beginning at 10:30 a.m. and finals beginning at 6:30 p.m.
