BUFFALO, N.Y. - Massachusetts and Richmond lead after the first day of the 2008 Atlantic 10 Men's & Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Flickinger Center.
The Minutemen, last year's champion, sit on top of the men's standings with 135 points, followed by St. Bonaventure (104) and Fordham (85). Rounding up the scoring are Xavier (68), Duquesne (66), Rhode Island (63), La Salle (62), Saint Louis (40) and George Washington (40).
Defending champion Richmond leads on the women's side with 80 points. They are followed by Xavier (66), Duquesne (66), St. Bonaventure (58), Fordham (58), Massachusetts (50), La Salle (50), George Washington (40), Rhode Island (40) and Saint Louis (28).
In the women's 200-yard medley relay, Richmond captured first place in a time of 1:44.02, behind the team of senior Jessica Witt, junior Lauren Beaudreau and sophomores Katie Sieben and Alex Helland.
For the men, St. Bonaventure's squad of seniors Scott Jordan and Roman Margulis, junior Pat Henahan and freshman David Kundzik earned gold in the event with a time of 1:32.04.
Senior RJ Rappe of Massachusetts broke his own A-10 record on the one-meter diving boards for the men with a score of 635.90.
The Spiders claimed their second gold finish on the evening in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:28.97). Witt and Beaudreau combined with freshmen Hannah Marlow and Chrissy Brodt to win the event.
Duquesne's 800-yard freestyle relay team of senior Ian Walsh, sophomore Brendan Schilling and freshmen Jim O'Hara and Edward LeBlanc finished first on the men's side, touching for a time of 6:42.51.
The championships continue on Thursday with morning trials at 10:30 a.m. and finals at 6:30 p.m. Doors open at the Flickinger Center at 9:15 a.m. Live streaming video can be found on www.atlantic10.org.
