BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The men's team from Massachusetts and the women's squad from Richmond remain ahead at the conclusion of the third day of the Atlantic 10 Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday at the Flickinger Center. The Minutemen continue to lead on the men's side with a total of 577.5 points, 156 points ahead of second place St. Bonaventure. For the women, the Spiders are atop the standings with 465 points, a 134 point lead over second place Xavier.
In the 400-yard medley relay, Richmond's squad of senior Jessica Witt, junior Lauren Beaudreau and sophomores Alex Helland and Katie Sieben earned the gold in 3:46.54. Their time broke the Spiders' 2005 conference record as Richmond captured the event for the seventh straight season. The Minutemen won the event behind their team of junior Nate Bromage, freshman Brian Schmidt, and sophomores Andrew Willbrant and Juan Moliere (3:21.46).
On the boards, Massachusetts senior RJ Rappe set a new conference record in three-meter diving. His total of 678.55 points broke the old mark of 617.65.
The St. Bonaventure men sit with 421.5 points in second place. Rounding out the rest of the men's standings are Duquesne (292), Xavier (282.5), Fordham (259), La Salle (243), Rhode Island (205.5), Saint Louis (152) and George Washington (133).
On the women's leader board, Xavier occupies the second spot with 331 points. The Musketeers are followed by Duquesne (304), Fordham (273), Massachusetts (271), St. Bonaventure (222), La Salle (160), Rhode Island (158), George Washington (136) and Saint Louis (133).
St. Bonaventure captured both victories in the 100-yard breaststroke. Senior Anneli Johnson touched in with a time of 1:03.47 to win gold for the Bonnies. Her time was good enough for NCAA qualifying consideration. Senior Scott Jordan earned gold for the men (56.63), as it was the third straight year Jordan won the event.
The Spiders' Witt secured gold in the women's 400-yard IM for the third consecutive season (4:22.80). Junior David Zenk of George Washington successfully defended his win in the men's event last year with a time of 3:56.36.
Next up was the 100-yard butterfly, which featured a tie for first between St. Bonaventure freshman David Kundzik and Bromage. Both posted a time of 48.88. Sieben was victorious for the women, touching for a time of 55.19. The 200-yard freestyle belonged to Duquesne. Senior Melissa Johnson garnered first place, as her time of 1:49.86 nearly broke an A-10 record. With a time of 1:39.26, freshman Edward LeBlanc grabbed the top spot for the Dukes on the men's side.
Willbrant won the men's 100-yard backstroke with a time of 50.33. Helland was victorious in the event on the women's side, touching for a time of 56.62.
The championships conclude on Saturday with the evening finals at 6:30 p.m. Morning trials will start at 10:30 a.m. with doors opening at the Flickinger Center at 9:15 a.m. For live streaming video and coverage of the event, visit www.atlantic10.org.
