Academic All-Conference Team

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Massachusetts' Karen Upperco and David Zenk of George Washington have been selected the Atlantic 10 Student-Athletes of the Year in women's and men's swimming & diving, respectively, in voting conducted among the Conference's sports information directors.

Upperco defended her title in the one-meter diving competition (270.70) and seized gold in the three-meter event (292.15) as Massachusetts finished fourth out of 10 teams at the 2009 Atlantic 10 Championship (Feb. 18-21) in Buffalo, N.Y. The senior from Titusville, N.J., joined former La Salle standout Melanie Coots (2000-02) as the lone performers in A-10 history to earn Most Outstanding Diver honors three times. Named the 2007-08 UMass Winter Female Scholar Athlete, Upperco boasts a 3.513 grade point average while majoring in Psychology.

Joining Upperco on the women's swimming & diving Academic All-Conference team teammates Lauren Beaudreau and Katie Sieben of Richmond; Duquesne's Katrina Streiner; Caitlin Napoli of Fordham; La Salle's Shannon Duval; Allison Whalen of St. Bonaventure; Anna Larson of Saint Louis; and Xavier's Kari Peglar and Martha Cutter-Wilson.

Zenk placed first and established meet records in the 200-yard backstroke (1:45.67), 200-yard individual medley (1:48.35) and 400-yard individual medley (3:52.17) events at the A-10 Championship (Feb. 18-21). The St. Louis, Mo., resident registered an NCAA "B" qualifying time in the 400-yard individual medley en route to winning the event for the fourth time, while capturing his third gold medal in both the 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard individual medley events, respectively. The senior was tabbed the Championship's Most Outstanding Performer for an unprecedented third time. Zenk maintains a 3.88 grade point average as a Biology major.

Joining Zenk on the men's swimming & diving Academic All-Conference team are Anthony Herzog and Edward LeBlanc of Duquesne; Fordham's Billy Colton, Justin Coombs and Ryan Coombs; Adam Duffield of Massachusetts; Michael Dahle and Stephen Sheridan of Saint Louis; and Xavier's Jake Burke.
