NEWPORT NEWS, Va - Jaime Vazquez and Salome Kvitashvili of VCU have been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Performers of the Week, respectively, the league office announced Tuesday. Xavier's Zach Mueck and Dayton's Katie Boeckman earned Rookie Performer of the Week honors. The student-athletes were recognized for matches played during the opening two weeks of the spring season, January 16-27. MEN'S TENNIS PERFOMER OF THE WEEK Vazquez extended his spring-season winning streak to 13 straight matches dating back to last season (3/3/12), with wins in VCU's 4-1 Invitational against Campbell, Georgetown, and James Madison. The senior Ram added three doubles victories against league opponent Richmond (6-4, 6-2), #34 Minnesota (8-4) and #6 Georgia (8-6), playing with teammate Alejandro Argente in the third doubles position. MEN'S TENNIS ROOKIE PERFORMER OF THE WEEK Mueck posted a 3-1 singles record, picking up three straight-set victories over Cleveland State (6-3, 6-3), IUPUI (6-2, 6-2), and Detroit (6-4, 6-2), all from the number three position. His only singles loss came to #4 Ohio State's Devin McCarthy. Mueck has also added three consecutive doubles wins, helping the Musketeers to an early 3-1 record on the season. WOMEN'S TENNIS PERFORMER OF THE WEEK
Kvitashvili has recorded a perfect 4-0 start in singles competition this spring, defeating Campbell (6-1, 6-3), Temple (6-0, 6-3) Morgan State (6-2, 6-2) and #65 DePaul (6-4, 6-3) in straight sets. The sophomore was leading #111 Lauren McHale of #8 UNC, but play was stopped when VCU dropped the match to the Tarheels. In her first doubles match of the spring, Kvitashvili helped clinch VCU's doubles point with a victory over DePaul from the third doubles spot. WOMEN'S TENNIS ROOKE PERFORMER OF THE WEEK Boeckman has picked up five wins in her first eight matches this spring from the fourth and fifth positions, including consecutive singles matches against Robert Morris (6-4, 6-2) and IUPUI (6-2, 6-2). The Dayton, Ohio, native, recorded a doubles win (8-5) with partner Sammi Hornbarger against IUPUI to help the Flyers improve to a 4-3 start on the season. |
