A-10 Announces Weekly Tennis Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Xavier's Mesa Mei and Charlotte's Paul Cisti have been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Tennis Co- Performers of the Week, while George Washington's Mimi Hamling has been named Women's Tennis Performer of the Week, the league announced Tuesday, for matches played February 4-10. Xavier's Adam Krull and Dayton's Katie Boeckman have earned Men's and Women's Rookie Performer of the Week honors, respectively. MEN'S TENNIS CO-PERFORMER OF THE WEEK Mei remained unbeaten and extended his current singles winning streak to eight last week, earning three singles wins and two doubles wins over Morehead State, Western Kentucky and Northern Kentucky. The junior posted his first straight set victory from the number one singles spot against WKU's J.T. Closi (6-2, 6-2), and added his fourth and fifth No. 1 doubles wins with partner Jimmy Roebker, both by scores of 8-3 (Morehead State, N. Kentucky) to complete the sixth consecutive 7-0 sweep for the Musketeers. MEN'S TENNIS CO-PERFORMER OF THE WEEK Cisti picked up three wins last week, including a singles victory against Mercer's Arsav Mohanty in straight sets (6-0, 6-4) from the No. 3 singles spot and a doubles win against Mercer's No. 1 pair, Anderson Scarpa and Joao Pagan, 8-4. The sophomore then lost his first set against College of Charleston's Charlie Ghriskey, but rallied back to win (1-6, 6-2, 6-2) to help clinch the victory for the 49ers. MEN'S TENNIS ROOKIE PERFORMER OF THE WEEK
Krull added three singles wins and a doubles win to his six-match winning streak with the Musketeers. The rookie defeated Morehead State's Nick Mercer (4-6, 6-2, 1-0(10-7)), battling back after dropping the first set, then posted straight set victories over Kento Okita of WKU (6-2, 6-4) and Jody Maginley of N. Kentucky (6-2, 6-1). His first doubles match of the dual season was a dominant 8-0 decision with partner Michael Moe against Western Kentucky. WOMEN'S TENNIS PERFORMER OF THE WEEK Hamling went undefeated last week, including singles victories over Georgetown's Madeline Jaeger (7-5, 1-6, 6-1) and a perfect showing against George Mason's Kiersten Pappas (6-0, 6-0) from the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, respectively. The senior added an 8-0 No. 2 doubles victory with teammate Leah Pascarella to complete the sweep of George Mason. WOMEN'S TENNIS ROOKIE PERFORMER OF THE WEEK Boeckman earned her second Rookie of the Week honors this year after picking up three singles victories against Youngstown State, Akron and Chicago State last weekend. Boeckman accounted for the only singles point against YSU for the Flyers, defeating Annina Brendel (6-2, 6-3) from the No. 5 position. The freshman beat Madison Cohen (1-6, 6-3, 12-10) in a 5-2 loss against the back-to-back defending MAC Champions of Akron, before posting a No. 4 singles straight set victory (6-1, 6-1) over Chicago State's Ruta Grinvalde and an 8-5 doubles win with partner Sammi Hornbarger for Dayton's fifth team victory of the spring season. |
