A-10 Announces Weekly Tennis Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Xavier's Jimmy Roebker and VCU's Michal Voscek were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Tennis Performer and Rookie Performer of the Week. Stephanie Hollis of Saint Louis and Katie Pleiman of Xavier earned Women's Tennis Co-Performer of the Week honors, while Massachusetts' Arielle Griffin was named Rookie Performer of the Week. The awards announced are for matches played the week of Feb. 11- Feb. 17. MEN'S TENNIS PERFORMER OF THE WEEK Roebker continued to excel at the No. 1 singles spot for the Musketeers, improving to 7-1 this spring with a win over Duquesne's Rich Robbie (6-3, 7-5) in Xavier's lone match last week. The junior also picked up a No. 1 doubles victory with partner Mesa Mei en route to a 7-0 sweep of the Dukes, posting a perfect 6-0 record when playing together. MEN'S TENNIS ROOKIE PERFORMER OF THE WEEK Voscek went 2-1 last week, posting No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles victories against a nationally ranked N.C. State squad (34). The rookie, paired with Max Wennakoski, earned the match-tying doubles point with an 8-2 win, before defeating Simon Norenius in straight sets (6-2, 6-2). The rookie was leading Michigan State's Dennis Bogatov, 6-2, when the Rams earned the team victory. WOMEN'S TENNIS CO-PERFORMER OF THE WEEK Hollis picked up a pair of singles and doubles wins last week to lead the Billikens to consecutive sweeps of Morehead State and SIUE last week. The junior, playing in the number one singles spot, tallied straight set wins over Morehead State's Briar Preston (6-3, 6-4) and SIUE's Kalie Donner (6-3, 6-3). Hollis improved to 8-3 in doubles play, netting two victories from the No. 2 and 3 spots.
WOMEN'S TENNIS CO-PERFORMER OF THE WEEK Katie Pleiman, Xavier Senior | Dayton, Ohio Pleiman earned her sixth and seventh No. 1 singles victories last week, defeating Butler's Stephanie McLoughlin (6-2, 7-5) and Cleveland State's Alexandra Bush (6-1, 7-5) in straight sets. She also paired with Kally Alkire for two No. 1 doubles victories, leading the Musketeers to a 7-2 start this spring. WOMEN'S TENNIS ROOKIE PERFORMER OF THE WEEK Griffin added five wins to the Minutewomen's perfect 3-0 weekend, posting wins over Army, St. Bonaventure and Fairleigh Dickinson. The rookie played both singles matches from the number four spot, defeating Army's Margaret Illiev (6-3, 7-5) and FDU's Dina Guzairova (7-5, 6-3). In doubles action, Griffin earned three wins in the second and third positions including a crucial 8-6 victory against Army's pair of Illiev Carolyn Pittman, lifting Massachusetts over Army, 4-3. |
