ST. LOUIS – Ninth-seeded Charlotte knocked-off top-seeded Xavier in a thriller, 4-3, during the opening round of the 2010 Atlantic 10 Women’s Tennis Championship at Kingsport Tennis Club in St. Louis, Mo. The 49ers advance to the semifinals to face No. 5 George Washington, Saturday, Apr. 24 at 11:00am, in the first of two semifinal matches of the day. Prior to its upset of Xavier, Charlotte also captured a convincing, 4-0, victory over No. 8 Rhode Island.

George Washington made its way to the semifinals with a decisive 4-0 triumph over No. 12 St. Bonaventure, before going on to stun No. 4 Duquesne, 4-2. After dropping the doubles point to the Dukes, the Colonials rallied in singles competition with wins on the number one, two, five and six courts. GW received straight-set victories from top singles player Jacqueline Corba, along with Mimi Hamling and Meg Tyner, at number two and six doubles, respectively.

The second semifinal match will feature defending champion Richmond, who earned a 4-1 decision over host Saint Louis. The second-seeded Spiders received straight-set wins from Sydney Grant, Joanna Matuszczyk and Isabel Arana en route to the program’s eighth-straight semifinal appearance.

Richmond will face No. 3 Temple, as the Owls advanced to the finals with a 4-1 triumph over No. 6 Massachusetts. TU will make their fourth-straight semifinal appearance.

Action commences at 8:00am on Saturday as No. 8 Rhode Island faces No. 10 Dayton, while No. 13 Fordham squares off with No. 12 St. Bonaventure and No. 11 Saint Joseph’s takes on No. 14 La Salle.
