PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Shiyi Zan of Massachusetts and Richmond's Matt Llano have been named the Atlantic 10 Student-Athletes of the Year in women's and men's cross country, respectively, in voting conducted among the Conference's sports information directors.
Zan finished first for the Minutewomen and eighth overall at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championship on Nov. 1 at Charlotte's Campus Course with a time of 18:18.3, garnering All-Conference first-team honors for her efforts. The Ottawa, Ontario, native was the individual champion on Sept. 20 in Massachusetts' home quad-meet versus Colgate, Maine and Vermont and finished ninth overall at the Albany Invitational on Oct. 18 in a season-best time of 18:05.7. Named to the Cross Country Academic All-Conference team for the second consecutive year, Zan boasts a 3.947 grade point average majoring in Kinesiology.
Joining Zan on the women's cross country Academic All-Conference team are teammates Becky Clark and Christina Schneider of Xavier; Liana Blue of Charlotte; Richmond's Diana Filtz and Nicol Traynor; and Mary Moloney of Saint Louis.
Llano finished runner-up to Charlotte's Adu Dentamo at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championship in a time of 24:05.2 and earned All-Conference distinction for the second consecutive season. The Arnold, Md., resident earned A-10 Performer of the Week honors after placing first in a field of 117 runners on Sept. 13 at the Navy Invitational with a time of 24:38.3. A two-time Academic All-Conference selection, Llano sports a 3.65 grade point average as a Psychology major.
Llano is joined on the men's cross country Academic All-Conference team by Clifton Hilario of Fordham; Charlotte's Ryan Jank; Kevin Johnson of Massachusetts; Dayton's Chris Lemon; and Andrew Wagoner of La Salle.
