NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Charlotte’s Shane Basen and Temple’s Nick Lustrino Co-Players of the Week, while VCU’s Ryan Farrar was named the league’s Pitcher of the Week and the Rams’ James Bunn took home Rookie of the Week of the honors.
Basen hit .583 in three games last week. He was 7-of-12 from the plate for the 49ers and had an on-base percentage of .643. Basen knocked in four runs on the week, including three RBI in a 12-3 win over High Point. Basen was also 4-of-5 from the plate against HPU. Basen earns the honor following his first week of playing shortstop after making 96 career starts at third base.
Lustrino helped the Owls to a 2-1 week, including a win over No. 24 Virginia Tech. Lustrino batted .545, going 6-for-11 over the weekend, which included one game with the Hokies and a doubleheader with Holy Cross. In game one of the doubleheader with HC, Lustrino was 4-of-5, including a game-tying single in the bottom of the ninth.
Farrar tossed eight shutout innings versus Saint Joseph’s in a 2-0 Rams win. Farrar allowed just three hits, while striking out six and walking just one in the finale of a three-game set. For the year, Farrar has allowed just seven hits in 13 innings of work, while striking out 10 and holding opponents to a .149 batting average.
Farrar’s teammate Bunn batted .455 for the week for the Rams. Bunn went 5-for-11 in the series with SJU. He had two hits in each of the first two games of the series and had one hit and scored a run in the series finale.
