PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - After winning its first Atlantic 10 Championship in program history, Xavier will face Kansas State on Friday at 3:00pm (EST) as the field of 64 teams competing for the 2009 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship was announced on ESPN on Monday by the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee.
XU (38-19), which earned its first-ever NCAA berth as a result of its 9-7 and 10-1 victories over Rhode Island on Sunday to claim the A-10 title, earned the third seed in the four-team, double-elimination Houston Regional. Kansas State (41-16-1) is the second seed in the regional, with Rice (39-15) earning the top seed and Sam Houston State (36-22) coming in as the No. 4 seed.
Having established a program record for single-season victories, the Musketeers are led by seniors Billy O'Conner and Jordan Conley. A senior catcher and leadoff hitter, O'Conner was tabbed the Most Outstanding Player of the A-10 Championship. Conley was nearly flawless at shortstop and recorded his team-record 13th save of the season on Sunday en route to earning a spot on the All-Championship Team.
