PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Dayton lefthander Cameron Hobson and Richmond second baseman Adam McConnell have been named to the 2009 Ping!Baseball Freshman All-America Team.
Named to the second team, Hobson was tabbed the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year after postng a 7-1 record with a 3.43 earned run average. The southpaw established a program single-season record with 83 strikeouts in 78.2 innings pitched. A native of Crawfordsville, Ind., Hobson issued just 16 walks and added a pair of saves and one complete game.
He finished second in the league in strikeouts and tied for fourth in wins. A second-team All-Conference selection, Hobson was also recently named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team.
McConnell was selected to the third team after leading the Spiders in hitting with his .355 average, while his 31 stolen bases led all NCAA freshmen and marked the third-most in a single-season at Richmond. The infielder from Yorktown, Va. finished second in the A-10 in steals (31), 11th in the league in hits (70) and 14th in runs scored (48).
He started 45 of the team's 47 games either at second base or shortstop and fielded .927 -- committing just 16 errors in 203 chances. McConnell was error-less in the final nine games of the season, and committed just two in the team's final 17 games. McConnell was named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team for his efforts.
