PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - After earning wins over Robert Morris and Virginia, Xavier has climbed to 16th in the Associated Press men's basketball top 25 poll released on Monday. In addition, the Musketeers are 18th in the ESPN/USA Today top 25 also released Monday.
The Musketeers improved to 11-2 on the season after earning an 84-70 road win over Virginia, led by senior guard B.J. Raymond's 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting. It marked the program's league-leading fifth win over a BCS-Conference team this season. XU was 22nd in both polls last week. Dayton is receiving votes in both polls after posting wins over George Mason (66-62) and Toledo (77-63) to improve to 13-1 overall.
In addition to the two major national polls, Xavier moved up to fourth in the latest RPI ratings for collegerpi.com, including a schedule strength that ranks second. XU trails only Pittsburgh, Butler and Duke in the overall RPI rankings and only Temple in schedule strength.
Xavier opens the Atlantic 10 Conference schedule against Saint Louis on Jan. 8 at 8:00pm at Cintas Center. The contest will be aired live on CBS College Sports.
