A-10 SCOOP

>>VCU gets its first A-10 road game Saturday when it travels to face St. Bonaventure and the notoriously rowdy Reilly Center crowd. Butler had the same experience Wednesday, opening on the road at Saint Joseph's. The Bulldogs play at UD Arena Saturday, another one of the A-10 best crowds.

>>The A-10 has two team and three individual statistics in which a member institution leads the nation. VCU is number one in steals and turnover margin and VCU'S Troy Daniels leads the nation in 3-pointers made. Darien Brothers of Richmond leads the nation in 3-point shooting percentage and VCU's Briante Weber ranks first in steals.

>>Saint Louis has returned to last year's form as the A-10's lock-down defensive team. Only three SLU opponents have cracked 50 since mid-December. Is addition, Butler has won its last 16 games when holding its opponent to fewer than 60 points.

THURSDAY'S (1/10) RESULTS

XAVIER 57, TEMPLE 52 | HIGHLIGHTS | TEMPLE POSTGAME

CINCINNATI (AP) - Travis Taylor made two free throws with 11 seconds left, and Xavier ended its longest losing streak in 31 years by beating Temple 57-52 on Thursday night despite missing point guard Dee Davis.

Davis hurt his left wrist in a pile-up with 7:15 left in the first half and went for X-rays. He returned with a minute left and missed two free throws, but got the final rebound.

Xavier (8-6, 1-0 Atlantic 10) wore its special gray uniforms, trying to snap a four-game losing streak. It was the Musketeers' deepest slump since they dropped seven straight during the 1981-82 season.

They held on against Temple (10-4, 0-1), which shot only 33.9 percent (20 of 59) from the field and couldn't overcome an 11-point deficit in the final 8 minutes. Anthony Lee had 15 for the Owls and Scootie Randall added 12.

Semaj Christon had 16 points for Xavier.

SAINT LOUIS 70, MASSACHUSETTS 62 | SLU HIGHLIGHTS | UMASS HIGHLIGHTS

ST. LOUIS - Rob Loe scored a career-high 20 points to lead four Saint Louis players in double figures, and the Billikens outscored Massachusetts 20-8 over the final 9:14 to claim a 70-62 victory Thursday night at Chaifetz Arena is the Atlantic 10 Conference opener for both teams.

The victory was SLU's ninth in a row and capped a 9-0 home stand for the Billikens (12-3, 1-0). It's the first nine-game winning streak for Saint Louis since the 1993-94 Bills began the season 14-0.

Loe tied his career high with six field goals (6-of-10), including a 2-of-4 effort from 3-point range, and also posted career highs of six free throws and seven free-throw attempts.

Jordair Jett scored 15 points, while Mike McCall Jr. and Kwamain Mitchell tallied 10 each. Cory Remekun collected nine rebounds to power the Billikens to a 38-35 edge on the glass.

Cady Lalanne scored a career-high 18 points and hauled in a game-high 13 rebounds (seven offensive) off the bench to lead UMass (10-4, 0-1), which had a seven-game winning streak halted. Chaz Williams had 14 points, six rebounds and a game-high seven assists, and Terrell Vinson chipped in 11 points.
