NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—The Atlantic 10 has selected St. Bonaventure senior forward Andrew Nicholson as its Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. Charlotte freshman guard Pierria Henry and Rhode Island freshman forward Jonathan Holton were chosen as the league’s Co-Rookies of the Week. The trio earned the awards Monday for games played during the week of Jan. 9-15.
Nicholson led St. Bonaventure with 25.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks across a pair of Atlantic 10 games last week. The Mississauga, Ontario, native posted 30 points, snared 13 rebounds and blocked six shots in handing Dayton its first A-10 loss, 81-73. It marked just the third 30+ 10+ 5+ game in the nation over the last two seasons, and Nicholson is the first Atlantic 10 player to accomplish the feat since Saint Joseph’s Ahmad Nivins in 2008. Nicholson followed that with a 20-point, seven-rebound outing at Xavier’s Cintas Center as the Musketeers extended their league-best conference home game win streak to 42 games, 77-64.
Henry scored in double figures in both of Charlotte’s games, running his string to four straight double-digit outings. A Charleston, W.Va., native, Henry, who ranks fifth in steals in the NCAA, added seven steals during the week, matching his season-high with five versus Saint Louis. The 13 points he scored at UMass matched his season high. For the week, Henry shot 9-of-16 (56.3 percent) from the field and 4-of-7 (57.1 percent) from three-point range.
Holton averaged 14.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocks in two games last week. He turned in his finest performance of the season against Duquesne. The Miami, Fla., native scored a career-high 21 points on 9-of-15 (60 percent) shooting while grabbing 12 rebounds (eight offensive). It was the third time that Holton registered a double-double in points and rebounds. He also added two blocks and two steals against the Dukes.
