A-10 SCOOP
>>VCU cracked the AP poll this week to give the A-10 two teams ranked in both polls. Butler is No. 13 in both the AP Poll and Coaches’ Poll. In addition, the A-10 has four other teams that have received votes in the AP and ESPN/USA TODAY Coaches Polls. Saint Joseph’s, Saint Louis, Temple, and Xavier have all gotten votes in both polls. This week Temple continues to receive votes.
>>The Atlantic 10 has five teams in Jerry Palm’s (CBSSports.com) latest Bracketology. he lists Butler, Charlotte, Saint Louis, Temple and VCU. Joe Lunardi’s latest bracketology has three A-10 teams dancing. Butler, VCU, Temple are all in and Saint Louis is among his four teams listed as “first out.”
>>La Salle is 22-4 over its last 26 home games. The Explorers have won 15 of last 16 non-conference regular season games at Tom Gola Arena, with the only loss being Central Connecticut State this season. The Explorers are off to their best start at 10-3 since the 1989-90 team started 12-1.
>>Charlotte has already won 14 games, surpassing the win total for 2009-10 (10) and 2010-11 (13). The Niners are just five wins from topping the 2008-09 season and six wins from reaching 20 for the first time since 2007-08.
SUNDAY'S (1/13) RESULTS
MASSACHUSETTS 77, FORDHAM 73
NEW YORK (AP) - Chaz Williams scored 22 points as Massachusetts held off Fordham 77-73 Sunday in Atlantic 10 Conference action.
The Minutemen (11-4, 1-1), whose 70-62 loss Thursday at Saint Louis snapped their seven-game winning streak, took a double-digit lead with 7:21 left in the first half and led by 14 in the second.
But the Rams chipped away, getting within two points with 2 minutes left and again with 1:04 remaining. Freddie Riley hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 34 seconds to go and Massachusetts hit 5 of 6 free throws in the final 26 seconds to hold on.
Terrell Vinson added 19 points for the Minutemen, Trey Davis a career-high 12 and Riley 11. Cady Lalanne had 11 rebounds.
Branden Frazier had 21 points for Fordham (5-12, 1-1) and Chris Gaston added 20 points and 13 rebounds. Ryan Canty grabbed 13 boards as the Rams dominated the glass 55 -42.
