Four Atlantic 10 teams picked up wins Sunday including Rhode Island's first victory of the year and a La Salle win over Villanova in the first Philadelphia Big 5 game of the year.

La Salle 77, Villanova 74

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Tyreek Duren scored seven of his 23 points in overtime, including the go-ahead layup with 18.2 seconds left, as La Salle defeated Villanova 77-74 Sunday.

Duren sent the game to overtime with a game-tying 26-foot 3-pointer with six seconds left in regulation. Ramon Galloway scored a game-high 26 points for La Salle (3-1), which snapped a 10-game losing streak to their in-state rival.

Mouphtaou Yarou scored 20 points and JayVaughn Pinkston had 19 for the Wildcats (3-3), who led by as many as 11 points in the second half.

Yarou's short jumper put Villanova ahead 74-70 with 2:24 left in overtime. But La Salle scored the next three points, on Galloway's free throw and Rohan Brown's layup, to pull within 74-73 with 58 seconds left. Villanova turned it over on its next possession and Duren scored off an assist from D.J. Peterson to seal the win for La Salle.

Rhode Island 78, Auburn 72

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Rhode Island guard Xavier Munford scored 33 points to lead the Rams to a 79-72, double-overtime victory on the road at Auburn Sunday afternoon.

Munford's desperation 3 at the buzzer at the end of the first overtime kept the Rams alive and forced another overtime period. The Rams outscored the Tigers 13-6 in the game's second overtime to earn the victory.

Senior forward Nikola Malesevic scored 19 points for Rhode Island, and former Auburn player Andre Malone recorded 13 points and 8 rebounds for the Rams.

The win marks Rhode Island's first victory of the season, lifting the Rams' record to 1-5. With the loss, Auburn drops to 2-4 on the year.

Freshman guard Jordan Price led the Tigers with 19 points off of the bench, shooting 5 of 8 from 3-point range in the losing effort. Forward Noel Johnson added 13 points for the Tigers.


Temple 80, Delaware 75

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Scootie Randall and Khalif Wyatt each netted 18 points as Temple beat Delaware 80-75 for a nonconference win Sunday.

Wyatt's output marked a career high as he made 6 of 12 shots, including 2 of 7 from beyond the arc, while Randall made 6 of 16 including three 3-point makes on nine attempts. Randall also had a team-high eight rebounds, while Wyatt turned in a game-best seven assists.

Jamelle Hagins led Delaware (2-4) with a career-high 29 points and pulled down 12 boards for his third double-double of the year. Devon Sadler added 25 points.

The Owls (3-0) rode sharp shooting to a 41-34 halftime advantage, connecting on 15 of 30 from the field, including 8 of 16 from 3-point range, in the first half.

The Blue Hens shot 56.9 percent (29 of 51) from the field for the game, but made just four 3-pointers to Temple's 11.


 

 


Xavier 74, Drake 70

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Semaj Christon scored 16 points, one of five Xavier players in double figures, and the Musketeers defeated Drake 74-70 Sunday in the consolation round of the DirecTV Classic.

Dee Davis had 15 points, Justin Martin and Jeff Robinson scored 13 apiece and Isaiah Philmore contributed 10 points for Xavier (5-1), which won two of three games in the tournament. Christon also had seven assists and Martin grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Joey King led all scorers with 21 points for the Bulldogs (2-3). Ben Simons scored 20 points for Drake and Jordan Clarke had 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Drake led 30-26 at the break but the Musketeers used an 11-0 run early in the second half to take the lead for good.
