A-10 SCOOP
>>Charlotte added to its best start in school history with Wednesday's win over Davidson. The 49ers are 8-0 after beating the Wildcats. Additionally, Temple beat Villanova Wednesday to improve to 6-0, the Owls best start since 1987-88, when the team started 14-0, finished 32-2 and advanced to the Elite Eight as a No. 1 seed.
>>Dayton won at Alabama, (81-76), Temple beat Villanova (76-61) and La Salle beat Penn State (82-57) Wednesday, giving the A-10 three more wins over "big six" programs, bringing the season total to 13. Last year, the A-10 picked up 28 victories versus big six schools, including three postseason victories. The Atlantic 10 has a winning record versus the SEC (4-3).
>>Continuing on the big wins theme, the Atlantic 10 has taken down three ranked opponents so far this season. Saint Joseph's began the fun with an overtime win over No. 20 Notre Dame. Butler stole the early week show with a win over No. 9 North Carolina Tuesday and VCU had the headline on Thanksgiving by defeating No. 19 Memphis. Dayton also won Wednesday at an Alabama team that has been receiving votes in both polls.
>>There have been 34 games decided by five or fewer points this year in the Atlantic 10. A-10 schools have a record of 20-14 in those games, but that winning percentage increases dramatically in games decided by single point. A-10 schools are 4-1 in those one-point affairs.
FRIDAY'S (12/7) RESULT
VCU 83, OLD DOMINION 70
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Troy Daniels tied a school record with eight 3-pointers and scored a career-best 24 points Friday night, leading Virginia Commonwealth to an 83-70 victory against Old Dominion.
Treveon Graham added 23 points for the Rams (6-3), who dominated for much of the night until the Monarchs closed within 65-53 with eight minutes left. But Rob Brandenberg scored on a drive with the shot clock winding down, Briante Weber tapped a steal into the open court and Brandenberg chased it down, slipped into the left corner and made the Rams' 11th 3-pointer to push the lead back up to 17.
DeShawn Painter, a transfer from North Carolina State, led the Monarchs with 26 points and 10 rebounds and Donte Hill had 13 as Old Dominion (1-8) lost its seventh in a row, and fifth at home.
