ON TAP FOR THURSDAY (12/27)RHODE ISLAND Rams (4-7) ON THE TUBEFriday, December 28 A-10 SCOOP>>There is one game on tap tonight after the A-10 took a three-day break for Christmas. The break followed a very full weekend. Saturday marked the busiest day of the season for the Atlantic 10 with 14 of the league's 16 teams in action. There was only one night game, Duquesne at Louisiana-Lafayette. All 13 of the other games tipped at 3:30 pm or earlier. Fordham and VCU, the two teams not playing Saturday, both played Friday and Fordham plays on Sunday as well.
>>Temple beat No. 3 Syracuse, Butler upset No. 1 Indiana, VCU and Dayton beat Alabama, in the most recent of the A-10's18 total wins this season over "big six" programs. Last year, the Atlantic 10 had 28 wins versus big six schools, including three in the postseason. >>Temple's win over No. 3 Syracuse extended its streak to five seasons of defeating a Top 10 opponent while being unranked at the time. It is the longest active streak in the nation. >>VCU's three losses came against the #2 (Duke), #12 (Missouri) and #23 (Wichita State). Those three teams are a combined 32-2 this year. The three losses came by a total of 14 points. SUNDAY'S (12/23) RESULTFORDHAM 81, SIENA 75 | HIGHLIGHTS NEW YORK (AP) - Chris Gaston scored 25 points and Branden Frazier added 20 points and 10 assists as Fordham held on for an 81-75 nonconference victory over Siena on Sunday. The Rams (3-9), who trailed 57-28 at halftime two days ago in an 88-73 loss to Connecticut, were sharp early this time, shooting 69 percent (20 of 29) in the first half. Gaston scored 20 points as Fordham took a 47-31 halftime lead. The senior forward now has 1,514 points, ninth on the school's career list. The Saints (2-10), in their first game since Dec. 9, rallied to shoot 60 percent (15 of 25) in the second half. They got within a point, 63-62, with 10:04 left after consecutive 3-pointers by Rob Poole and Rakeem Brookins, but three straight Fordham made it 69-62. Poole had 21 points, Brookins 18 and O.D. Anosike 16 for Siena. Bryan Smith added 16 points for Fordham. |
