>>There are two games on tap tonight after the A-10 took a break for Christmas. The break followed a very full weekend. Saturday marked the busiest day of the season for the Atlantic 10 with 14 of the league's 16 teams in action. There was only one night game, Duquesne at Louisiana-Lafayette. All 13 of the other games tipped at 3:30 pm or earlier. Fordham and VCU, the two teams not playing Saturday, both played Friday and Fordham plays on Sunday as well. >>Temple beat No. 3 Syracuse, Butler upset No. 1 Indiana, VCU and Dayton beat Alabama, in the most recent of the A-10's18 total wins this season over "big six" programs. Last year, the Atlantic 10 had 28 wins versus big six schools, including three in the postseason. >>VCU's three losses came against the #2 (Duke), #12 (Missouri) and #23 (Wichita State). Those three teams are a combined 32-2 this year. The three losses came by a total of 14 points. THURSDAY'S (12/27) RESULTST. MARY'S 82, RHODE ISLAND 59 MORAGA, Calif. (AP) - Stephen Holt scored 17 points, leading five players in double figures, to help St. Mary's beat Rhode Island 82-59 Thursday night. Holt was 5 of 12 from the field and had six rebounds. Matthew Dellavedova had a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists. James Walker III had 14 points, shooting 4 of 5 from 3-point range, and a team-high eight rebounds. Beau Levesque scored 14 points, and Mitchell Young had 10 for the Gaels (9-3) St. Mary's led 35-26 at halftime and never looked back. The Gaels outrebounded the Rams 42-17 and shot 52.7 percent from the field for the game. Rhode Island shot 43.4 percent. Xavier Munford led the Rams (4-8) with 20 points. Andre Malone and Mike Powell had 12 points apiece. Jordan Hare had four rebounds. The Rams won the lone previous meeting between the two schools, an 81-74 decision on Jan. 2, 1996. |
